‘the XPOSED international queer short film festival berlin’  returns to SCHWUZ for it’s 4th year of showing queer films from abroad to an enthusiastic Berlin pride week audience! On June 25th prepare for an onslaught of Queer short films and Documentaries by, about and from Turkey!

After beginning during the 2006 Pride Week in Berlin, the XPOSED International Queer Short Film Festival has brought past XPOSE on many countries from abroad, including Australia, Canada and Korea! This year in our fourth year, we have decided to take a look at Queer Living from Turkey, for many of us here in Berlin, our neighbours, that we would love to get to know better.

Lots Wife – 10’
D – Harjant Gill & Koray Durak

Lot’s Wife, eine moderne Inszenierung von Sodom und Gomorrah, spielt in einer Stadtrandsiedlung der türkischen Stadt Istanbul. Mehmet ist ein fleißiger junger Mann und wohnt in einem kleinen Haus, das seinem Onkel Seyfeddin gehört. Wovon Seyfeddin nichts wusste, ist dass Mehmet mit seinem Freund Ali zusammenlebt. Eines Tages platzt Seyfeddin, zusammen mit seiner Frau Meryem und seinen beiden Brüdern Hidir und Mikail in Mehmet’s Wohnung. Sie drohen Mehmet’s Hoffnung, und alles was er bis dahin mit Ali aufgebaut hat, zu zerstören. Aus der Sicht von Meryem, Seyfeddins Frau, erzählt, ist Lot’s Wife ein kühner und eindringlicher Film über gleichgeschlechtliche Anziehung in der islamischen Welt und ihren Konsequenzen. Obwohl der Film in der Türkei spielt, enthält Lot’s Wife Parallelen zu den Sanktionen, die auf der ganzen Welt im Namen Gottes gegen gleichgeschlechtliche Anziehung verhängt werden. Der Film lädt den Zuschauer außerdem dazu ein, die traditionell negative Figur der Ehefrau von Lot in Frage zu stellen, die namenlose Frau, die es wagte sich umzublicken und dann zu einer Salzsäule erstarrte, da sie das Patriarchat herausgefordert hatte.

Lot’s Wife is a modern day tale of Sodom and Gomorrah set in a shantytown located on the outskirts of Istanbul, Turkey. Mehmet is a young hardworking guy who lives in a small house that belongs to his uncle Seyfeddin. Unbeknownst to Seyfeddin, Mehmet is living with his lover Ali. On one summer day, Seyfeddin along with his wife Meryem, and two brothers, Hidir and Mikail barge into Mehmet’s apartment, threatening to destroy everything he hopes for and had created with Ali so far. Told through the eyes of Seyfeddin’s wife Meryem, Lot’s Wife is a bold and haunting film about same-sex desire in the Islamic world, and the ramifications of expressing that desire. And even though the film is set in Turkey, Lot’s Wife draws parallels between the sanctioning of same-sex desire in the name-of-faith from all over the world. The film also invites the audience to question the traditionally negative role attributed to Lot's Wife, that nameless woman who dared to look back, and thus turned into a pillar of salt for challenging patriarchal dominance.

Strange – 17’
D- Mehmet Selcuk Bilge

Ein brotloser Schauspieler mittleren Alters lebt mit seiner Frau und deren Teenager-Sohn zusammen. Er verliert sich in Gedanken darüber, wo im Leben er sich befindet, ob es Sinn macht was er tut, und ob ihn überhaupt irgendjemand wahrnimmt. Sein Stiefsohn jedoch nimmt ihn wahr, nimmt besonders wahr, wie gut gebaut und attraktiv sein Stiefvater ist. In dieser Geschichte über das Verlorensein scheinen die einzigen Menschen, die nicht verloren sind, diejenigen zu sein, die sich versteckt halten müssen.

A struggling middle age actor is living with his wife and her teenage son. He is lost in thought about where he is in his life, what he is doing and is anyone even noticing him. His step son however is noticing and is especially noticing how fit and handsome his step father is becoming. In this tale of being lost, it seems that the only people that may not be lost, could be those, who have to stay hidden.

A place that is in many ways more accepting of difference then say Turkey, but through this film, we see there are always similarities between the two countries. Ipek, a well known DJ of the Berlin night scene, Demet, who is politically active for 27 years and Gurkan, who had moved from Turkey to Germany, are sharing their opinions and experiences about homosexuality, Turkey, identity and Berlin

Such dir einen Callboy und du wirst alle deine Probleme vergessen. Gibs zu: haben wir nicht alle ein gebrochenes Herz? In den nächtlichen Straßen von Istanbul folgen wir einem Stricher, der plötzlich die Kamera bemerkt, sich jedoch nicht abwendet, und nach einer kleinen Konfrontation erlaubt der rüpelhafte Stricher dem Jungen mit der Kamera, ihn eine Nacht lang zu filmen. Schon bald fühlen sich die beiden voneinander angezogen, der eine auf sexuelle Weise, der andere aus purem Bedarf an menschlicher Interaktion. Welcher ist welcher?

Choose a rentboy and forget about all your problems. Confess: Aren’t we all broken hearted? We are taken into the night streets of Istanbul and here we follow a rough looking street hustler, who happens then notice the camera, not shying away, the two have a small confrontation and the Rough Street Hustler agrees for the boy with the camera to film him for the night. The two quickly establish an attraction for each other, one sexually and the other, out of pure need for human interaction. Which one is which?

Esmeray: a story of resistance – 16’

Esmeray sucht ein Leben abseits der obligatorischen Sexarbeit, die die Gesellschaft von Transsexuellen verlangt. Dabei bringt sie uns dazu, die Bedeutung von „Ehre“ zu überdenken.

Esmeray, trying to have a life apart from the compulsory sex workmanship for all transsexuals insisted by society, forces us to rethink about ‘honor’.

Makbul – (His Favoured One) – 7’
D – Huseyin Karagoz

Ein historischer Film, der im 16. Jahrhundert spielt. Es gibt zwei Figuren, Ottoman Sultan Suleiman der Große und Ibrahim der Maqbul, sein Bevorzugter. Ibrahim, der Hauptverwalter der königlichen Gemächer, kommt in das Zimmer, in dem Sultan ihn erwartet, und bringt alles Notwendige für die Fußwaschung. Die königlichen Füße werden gewaschen und die Fußnägel geschnitten. Dieses Amt wird als stille homo-erotische Zeremonie betrieben. In Makbul liest sich Geschichte subjektiv. Makbul ist ein Film über Macht und Leidenschaft. Er zielt darauf, Macht in Frage zu stellen. Wer ist mächtiger, der Sultan oder der Sklave, den er liebt? Wie weit kann sich jemand herablassen, um den Geliebten zu verletzen und somit die volle Kontrolle über diesen zu haben? Wo ist die Grenze zwischen Ehrsucht und Leidenschaft?

An historic film, set in the 16th century. There are two characters, the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and Irbahim the Makbul, his favoured one. Ibrahim, as the chief caretaker of the royal chambers, comes into the room where the Sultan is awaiting him and brings the neccessary material for foot washing. The royal feet are washed and the toenails cut. These functions are practiced as a silent homo-erotic ceremony.History in “Makbul” is subjectively read. “Makbul” is a film about power and passion. It aims at questioning power. Who is more powerful, the sultan or the slave that he loves? How far can one go in lowering oneself to hurt the beloved and thus have complete control over him? Where is the line that separates ambition and passion?

This year we will also be celebrating these films by throwing a massive party, hosted by Trixi von Heute, we will be turning SCHWUZ into the inside of a Turkish Water Pipe, complete with International Entertainment from renowned Australian DJ Seymour Butz plus Mikki_P and on our indierock-trash floor, our very own local Desolation Disko King & Das Ponymaedchen.

XPOSED is about XPOSER and XPOSING.  It’s about FUN, BERLIN and it’s about TIME! ‘The XPOSED international queer short film festival berlin’ was created to bring Queer Short Films from other nations to Berlin during Pride Week and to provide international Xposure for Queer Filmmakers from around the world. This year, we will also be announcing from which nation our 5th Anniversary will be focusing on. It is going to be HUGE!
