AUSTRALIA'S FIRST GAY MARRIAGE HELD IN CAROLINE
SPRINGS!
… A family first musical
“I do, in Caroline Springs” is a New Musical with a stunning cast of great voices. Doyenne of stage and screen, Anne Phelan, who has appeared in over 25 television series, 40 theatre productions and, is the recipient of 2 AFI awards and a Green Room award, leads the cast of seven. This production features a live 5-piece orchestra, fully staged musical numbers choreographed by Erica Chestnut, and original design by Matthew Aberline. It is being performed at Chapel off Chapel as part of the 2005 Midsumma Festival.
It asks: what are family values? Are they those of gay lovers Alan and Borge, and his mother Joy, who want to build a cosy mutated nuclear unit around their love?
Or, are they those of the local Family Values Senator who must break them up and stuff Alan’s free thinking ballads from the seventies back into their powder-coated closet to preserve his Christian Rock Music empire.
Emerging artists and partners Peter Lubulwa and Julian Hobba have collaborated on the book, lyric and score to create a farcical romp through the queer throbbing heart of aspiring suburbia.
Of the script Julian says, “There is a desperate need when people’s lifestyles are under attack (from conservative govt.) to just be yourself, and if that is gay, frivolous, funny, then that is an important thing to do.”
Director Peter J Adams currently Resident Director of the new Mel Brooks musical, The Producers, is bringing his passion for new work to the fantastic Loft venue in Chapel off Chapel. “It is a really strong company which will deliver the original score by Peter Lubulwa with great power and also add new twists to a couple of old favourites.”
With characters including TV’s Dr Cindy Pan and Sal the interior designing fish, played by prominent drag performer, Laura Gravity (Diva Bar, The Greyhound), I do in Caroline Springs is perfect entertainment for anyone looking for a way to laugh at the current trend towards social conservatism. It is a comedy played with truth and conviction, where ordinary people in an ordinary day have extraordinary things happen!
